Australia will fine tech giants, such as Facebook owner Meta and Google owner Alphabet, if they do not pay for the journalism produced by local news organizations.

The threat of fines is intended to pressure tech companies to negotiate with producers of local journalism about compensation for news production.

The rapid emergence of digital platforms in recent years has led to disruptions in Australia's media landscape and threatens the viability of journalism that the public needs, says Australia's Communications Minister Michelle Rowland.
