The man was previously employed as an IT consultant at the Swedish Armed Forces between 2018 and 2022. In that role, he took part in secret information that he tried to reveal to Russia in the autumn of 2025.

He offered to provide the information to the Russian security service FSB and the military intelligence service GRU, including during a trip to Moscow, according to the indictment.

In exchange, he wanted protection from Swedish authorities and to become a Russian citizen in the future.

The verdict establishes that there was a danger that the crime would be completed or that only temporary circumstances put an end to his espionage plans.

Denies crime

A forensic psychiatric examination earlier this summer determined that the man suffers from a serious mental disorder. The sentence will be forensic psychiatric care with special discharge assessment.

He is convicted against his denial.

During interrogation, the man claimed that he had been persecuted and blackmailed by the Swedish Defence Radio Agency, FRA, and that the suspicions against him were provoked by FRA.

The investigation is partially classified and large parts of the trial in Stockholm District Court have taken place behind closed doors.

"In summary, the prosecutor has proven that the man has attempted to disclose information covered by the espionage provision to a foreign power," says the court's president, Magdalena Hägg Bergvall, in a press release from Stockholm District Court.

Pursued FRA guard

The man is also sentenced to pay damages for two counts of harassment, which consisted of stalking a security guard who worked at FRA between his home and work in a car.

The 34-year-old is also being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, a crime that is said to have been committed in December last year. According to the prosecutor, the target of the murder plans was a person in Sweden and the murder was partly planned in Moscow.
