An Austrian has been arrested by Croatian authorities, suspected of attempting to smuggle a dead woman into the country.
The 65-year-old man was stopped at the border crossing in Gunja between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia in November after presenting travel documents for himself and a passenger, according to the police in a statement.
The border personnel became suspicious when it was discovered that the female passenger "was not conscious and did not communicate". A forensic doctor called to the scene was able to determine that the passenger was dead.
According to the authorities, the 83-year-old woman had died in Bosnia and the driver attempted to take her body back to Austria to "avoid formalities related to the transport of the deceased".
The police have described the man as the deceased's guardian.
