The attack on the funeral took place on Tuesday in the town of al-Ubayyid, the UN's humanitarian coordination agency OCHA said. There is no information on who was behind it, but OCHA stresses that the situation in the region is becoming increasingly urgent.
"Once again, OCHA calls for an immediate ceasefire and for all parties to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law," they write .
Kordofan – strategically located between the Darfur region and the capital region around the Nile – is the latest battlefield in Sudan's bloody civil war, which has lasted since April 2023. Both sides in the conflict are fighting to take control of al-Ubayyid, the capital of North Kordofan, which is described as an important logistical hub connecting Darfur and the capital Khartoum and which also houses an airport.
The battle for al-Ubayyid follows the RSF militia's capture of al-Fashir in the neighboring Darfur region. Reports coming from al-Fashir testify to serious abuses and war crimes.
