There were many derby goals in Madrid on Saturday evening when Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid met in La Liga.
Prior to the meeting, Real had sailed forward as the season's form-strongest team, while Atlético had struggled to find the rhythm.
However, it was Diego Simeone's team that set the tone. Robin Le Normand headed in 1–0 and silenced the away crowd. But Real responded quickly: Kylian Mbappé equalized and shortly thereafter Vinícius Júnior served young Arda Güler to 2–1 – a turnaround that seemed to give the visitors momentum.
The match picture continued to swing. Just before the break, Atlético rose again when Alexander Sørloth appeared in the penalty area and headed in 2–2.
After the break, the home team stepped on the gas. When the team got a penalty in the 51st minute, Julián Álvarez stepped forward and ice-coldly made it 3–2. The Argentine star was not satisfied with that – just over ten minutes later, he thundered in a free kick to 4–2 and sent Real Madrid towards a tough uphill climb.
Veteran Antoine Griezmann then set the final score to 5–2, Real Madrid's first loss of the season.
