Despite the eased situation, the fire department is still on alert - around lunchtime it usually gets warmer and drier, which makes for a raging fire.
The efforts are mainly focused on Psatha, a seaside resort west of Athens. At dawn, seven water-bombing aircraft were deployed to support 450 firefighters, as well as nearly 50 firefighters from France and Romania.
More than 500 firefighters have been deployed to villages around Mount Kithairon, about 60 kilometres northwest of Athens.
It is a huge area and it could flare up at any time, said fire service spokesman Yiannis Artopios on state-run ERT.
