The shooting broke out in the Les Moulins district at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, following a weekend of violence. A search operation is underway for the perpetrators.
The mayor of Nice, Éric Ciotti, linked the incident to recent tensions between criminal groups in the city. Ciotti told reporters on the scene that “drug dealers” had “declared war on the republic.”
The residents of Les Moulins have been plagued by violent gang conflicts in recent years.
"It's totally unsafe. Even though the police are here all the time, constantly, you could end up in a hail of bullets at any time," a resident tells Nice-Matin.
The leadership of the Alpes-Maritimes department announced on Sunday that police reinforcements would be sent to the area to "restore security," writes Le Monde.
