The accident happened near the town of Lent, north of Lyon in eastern France, on Friday morning. The bus left the road and crashed into a tree, the mayor of Lent told French media. Images show the bus leaning slightly in a ditch.
Authorities have announced that two minors have died, according to French media. Around 10 people have been injured, three of them seriously.
According to media reports, up to 70 people were involved in the accident. The victims are said to be schoolchildren.
French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said earlier that he was on his way to the scene.
