Shortly after 10 p.m., the car rammed a bus stop outside the train station in central Caen. According to police sources quoted by AFP, it was preceded by some kind of brawl near a bar.
One person was reported dead at an early stage and on Thursday another person died from their injuries. Up to ten people were injured, several of them very seriously. All involved are men.
The driver of the car, a 26-year-old Russian man, fled the scene but was later arrested in a town a few miles away.
"At this stage, at first glance, we are not dealing with a terrorist motive. But the investigation has only just begun," prosecutor Philippe Leonardo told AFP.
