Saudi Arabia, which is closely allied with Yemen's internationally recognized government, carried out several airstrikes on Friday as part of an effort to push back separatists in Hadramawt province.
Fighting has continued over the weekend, and Saudi-led forces say they have retaken the capital of Hadramawt and that separatists have withdrawn from military camps in a number of other cities.
The STC, in turn, is supported by the United Arab Emirates. The movement announced on Friday that its goal is now to form a new state after a two-year transition period. This would mean dividing today's Yemen into northern and southern parts.
