72 people were confirmed dead on Sunday, five more than on Saturday, said Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, who represents the Spanish government in Ceuta.

Many of the victims died while trying to swim around a breakwater into the enclave, which borders Morocco on the North African Mediterranean coast.

Most of the up to 60,000 migrants who crossed the border from Morocco in recent days have returned, according to Spanish authorities. Spanish police and the military patrolled the enclave on Sunday, and only small groups of migrants remained on the streets.

On Saturday, Spain deployed a floating barrier in the sea towards Morocco.
