At least 52 people were killed and 30 injured in an attack on two villages in Plateau state in central Nigeria late on Sunday, according to a source within the Red Cross.
The attackers were said to have been armed with firearms and knives, witnesses told AFP.
The attack on the villages of Zike and Kimakpa comes after earlier attacks on villages in the same state earlier in April, when 52 deaths were also reported.
The area has been plagued by deadly clashes in recent years due to land disputes, often between Muslim cattle herders and Christian farmers. The absence of law enforcement authorities has previously led to spirals of violence.
"We cannot allow this destruction and revenge attacks to continue. Enough is enough", says Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu in a statement, promising to investigate the attacks.
