Rescuers continued searching for survivors in Minas Gerais state and the cities of Juiz de Fora and Uba on Wednesday. The confirmed death toll was at least 40, including 34 in Juiz de Fora. 27 people were missing after houses were buried by landslides in the floods.

One of the victims, Josiane Aparecida, lost both an aunt and a cousin in a landslide. Additional relatives are missing.

"We still have hope, and yet we don't. It's hard to find them," said Aparecida as she searched for her cousins, aged two and nine. Her boyfriend was also missing.

The search for Aparecida continued as rescuers tried to clear the rubble.
