At least 35 children died and several were injured when panic broke out at a temporary amusement park in southwestern Nigeria on Wednesday. Many of them were trampled to death, according to the police who announced the death toll on Thursday.
The tragedy occurred at a primary school in the city of Ibadan in the state of Oyo, where a local association held an event that attracted several thousand locals, many of them children.
Eight people involved in the arrangement have been arrested, said Oyo's police chief Adewale Osifeso.
"The incident occurred at an Islamic school that had a family market. A large number of people were killed in the chaos that ensued – and many were trampled to death", said Governor Seyi Makinde in a statement immediately after the tragedy occurred.
