A truck carrying passengers crashed in Kano State in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least 30 people, local authorities said.

The accident was caused, according to a statement, by negligence on the road.

Many people were also injured. The state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered free medical care for the survivors.

Traffic accidents occur frequently on the country's poorly maintained roads. In 2023, just over 5,400 people died in traffic accidents, according to official figures.
