Two minibuses and a larger car were involved in a Sunday evening crash on a highway in Western Cape province. At least 21 people were killed and several more were injured.
The police have launched an investigation into the crash, which occurred just under 400 kilometres northeast of Cape Town.
Thousands of people die on South Africa's roads every year. The country has one of Africa's most well-developed road networks, but struggles with widespread speeding, drunk driving, poorly maintained vehicles and a lack of seatbelt use.
Last year, almost 11,500 people, most of them pedestrians, were killed in accidents on the country's roads.
