The gang is said to have opened fire on a total of five villages and killed a large number of people, most of whom were farmers.
The area has been terrorized for years by heavily armed gangs that have looted villages, stolen livestock and subjected the local population to violence. Earlier this week, more than 40 people were kidnapped in the same state, Zamfara, in raids on villages.
