At Least 21 Dead in Migrant Boat Shipwreck Off Senegal as Search Continues

At least 21 people have died in a shipwreck off Senegal, as migrant journeys along the African Atlantic coast become increasingly common.

The accident occurred off Kébémer department in northwestern Senegal, the country's interior ministry said.

The provisional death toll is 21. One person is reported to have survived, and search operations are underway. The state news agency APS quoted a source as saying that at least 20 bodies had washed up on a beach. It is not known how many people were on board the boat.

Senegal is a common transit country for migrants seeking to reach the Spanish Canary Islands and Europe by sea. The number of arrivals has risen significantly in a short time, with more than 700 migrants reaching the islands on Saturday alone. In just over a week, more than 3,300 have arrived on the island of El Hierro, where local authorities have declared a state of emergency.
