At least 17 people have died in a building fire in the Indian city of Hyderabad in the state of Telangana, according to local authorities.

The extensive fire broke out early on Sunday morning in a three-story building that houses a jewelry store.

"The fire broke out on the ground floor and spread to the upper floors," it says in a statement from the rescue service.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi expresses his "deep sorrow" over the deaths and promised a compensation of 200,000 rupees, equivalent to approximately 22,500 kronor, to each victim's relatives.

Fires are common in India due to poor building methods, overpopulation and lack of compliance with safety regulations. Last month, 15 people died in a fire at a hotel in Kolkata.
