When police arrived at the scene in the Johannesburg suburb of Cleveland late Tuesday evening, they were met by several people with gunshot wounds, reported the South African news agency African News Agency (ANA).
At least twelve people are reported to have been killed, and about ten have been injured and taken to hospital.
No one has been arrested yet, but police say ten suspects jumped out of a car near a gas station and opened fire.
