The incident occurred at a police post on Saturday in the city of Bannu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.
After someone detonated a bomb, gunfire broke out between the attackers and police. A building collapsed in connection with the attack. Several people were killed, and several police officers were injured.
Security forces have launched an operation to find those responsible.
A newly formed militant group, which describes itself as a breakaway from the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
