A monster storm is sweeping across the United States, paralyzing parts of the country from Texas to New England. The death toll rose on Monday as extreme cold posed life-threatening conditions.

At least 11 people have died in the storm. Five people were found dead outdoors in New York over the weekend, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He would not confirm whether the deaths were weather-related, but said it was a "powerful reminder" of the dangers of extreme cold.

A total of six deaths related to the storms have been reported in the states of Louisiana, Texas and Iowa.

At least 20 states and the capital, Washington, D.C., have declared a state of emergency. Flights have been canceled at several major airports in Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

The snowstorms have also led to widespread power outages.
