It was on Saturday that a shaft in the Awny mining area near the Sudanese border with Egypt collapsed.
On Sunday, "ten bodies were recovered and 21 injured miners were pulled out," says a survivor who was working in the mine when it collapsed.
According to another person, the rescue efforts, which lasted all night, were "carried out by the miners themselves" with limited equipment.
Last week, more than 80 people died in a mine collapse in the Kordofan region.
Since the civil war broke out in April 2023, the war effort has been largely financed by the country's billion-dollar gold trade.
