The coast guard reported on Sunday that the ship "set sail from the coast of Libya and had about 60 people on board."
The Maltese Coast Guard requested assistance in connection with the accident, which occurred southeast of the Maltese coast.
According to reports, the passengers were migrants seeking to reach Europe.
The search for additional people continued late Sunday.
