The death toll is rising after Saturday's ferry accident. As of Tuesday night, Swedish time, 27 people have been confirmed dead. Another 83 people are still missing, says Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

Phillips also says it is suspected that far more than the registered 116 passengers and 17 crew members were on the boat. Almost half of those rescued were not on the passenger list.

The accident occurred as the MV Barima ferry was en route from the capital Georgetown on the coast and along a river to the Essequibo region inland. The distress call came in late Saturday evening local time.

Two of the crew have tested positive for marijuana after the accident, and an investigation is underway, says Mark Phillips.
