Tuchel takes over England

After the summer's loss in the European Championship final, Gareth Southgate resigned as the national team captain for England's men's football team. Now the replacement is supposed to be clear. The German Thomas Tuchel is said to have accepted the job, according to several media outlets.

Thomas Tuchel coached Bayern München last season, but as early as February, the German giant club and the coach agreed to terminate the contract prematurely.

The season ended in disappointment – after eleven consecutive Bundesliga titles, Bayern München finished second in the league behind Bayer Leverkusen.

Third foreign national team coach

Since then, Tuchel has been without a job, but now he is said to have accepted the offer to become the national team coach for England, according to media reports from The Times, Sky Sports, BBC, and the German newspaper Bild.

Tuchel can thus become the third foreign national team coach for England after Swede Sven-Göran Eriksson and Italian Fabio Capello.

The English Football Association (FA) does not want to comment on the reports, but says that its CEO Mark Bullingham will provide an update on the national team coach position on Wednesday at the national arena Wembley.

England lost the European Championship final against Spain last summer, and shortly afterwards, Gareth Southgate announced that he would resign as national team coach after nearly eight years in the position. Since then, Lee Carsley has acted as interim national team coach.

Won Champions League

Thomas Tuchel joined Bayern München in March 2023 and led the team to the Bundesliga title that spring.

In September 2022, Tuchel was forced to leave his coaching job at Chelsea, which he had led to the Champions League title in 2021 after taking over in January of the same year.

Before his time in the Premier League, he won two league titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain. He also led PSG to the Champions League final during the pandemic season in 2020, but lost to Bayern München.

Tuchel has also coached Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Mainz.
