Much pointed upwards on the Asian stock exchanges in Tuesday's initial trade.

Several of the Asian stock exchanges remained at record levels. Japan's Nikkei 225 index was up 0.3 percent at lunchtime and set a new record. Also, the broader Topix index had reached new record levels after a rise of 0.4 percent.

The South Korean Kospi also continued to rise. Yesterday's record level was further strengthened and the index rose 1.2 percent.

Trump came yesterday with the message that trade talks between the US and China are moving forward.

In China, however, the trend pointed downwards. The Shanghai composite index had fallen 0.5 percent by lunchtime and the Hong Kong-based Hang Seng with 0.4 percent. Shenzhen fell 0.9 percent.
