Strong swings have become something of a hallmark of the South Korean Kospi. After falling the most on Monday, it started both Tuesday and Wednesday clearly higher. At lunchtime, the index is up 5.1 percent.

The stock market in Tokyo was also buoyant. The main Nikkei 225 index is up 1.9 percent and the broader Topix is up 1.3 percent.

In China, the movements are smaller. Shanghai is up 0.1 percent while Shenzhen is unchanged.

The Hang Seng also moved against the grain on Wednesday, falling 0.9 percent.
