Trump's tariff announcement came on Wednesday evening, local time in Sweden. Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.9 percent in Thursday's trading while the broader Topix rose 0.9 percent. In South Korea, the Kospi rose 2.0 percent.
However, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong was down slightly, at 0.2 percent. Both Shanghai and Shenzhen were also down 0.2 percent.
