The Japanese Nikkei 225 index had increased by 0.3 percent at the lunch closing, while the broader Topix index fell by 0.7 percent.
The Hong Kong-based Hang Seng rises by 1.5 percent.
Shanghai and Shenzhen are closed for the holiday.
