The Tokyo Stock Exchange's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.2 percent, and the broader Topix index rose 0.2 percent.
South Korea's Kospi fell 2.3 percent.
The Hong Kong-based Hang Seng rose 1.3 percent, and Shanghai fell 0.6 percent.
Shenzhen fell 0.8 percent.
