Many major Asian indices were up in early trading on Thursday. South Korea's Kospi rose by 2.2 percent by lunchtime.
In Tokyo, the main Nikkei 225 index rose by 0.6 percent while the broader Topix climbed by 1.3 percent.
Slightly smaller gains were seen on the Shenzhen index, which rose by 0.3 percent. In Shanghai, the market was unchanged at lunchtime.
The Hong Kong-based Hang Seng index fell by 0.4 percent.
