Asian drought pushes rice prices sharply higher

In Thailand, the price has risen by as much as 18 percent, while rice prices on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange have increased by around 40 percent.

In several Asian countries such as India, Vietnam and the Philippines, producers have experienced monsoon rainfall well below normal. The US Department of Agriculture now expects global production to decline for the first time in eleven years.
