Winnipeg led the game 3-0 after two goals in the first period and one in the second, all on the power play.
In the closing stages of the second period, Viktor Arvidsson scored for Detroit on the power play after a pass from Andrew Copp, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
Detroit cut the lead again early in the third period when young Canadian Emmitt Finnie made it 3-2.
With seconds left, Lucas Raymond hit the post, but there was no equaliser and the game ended 3-2 to the away team.
Viggo Björk got just over 13 minutes of ice time in the match and had one shot on goal.
