Director Wim Wenders stirred emotions at Thursday's opening press conference when he was asked about the film's role in politics, including issues related to the war in Gaza.
"We are the counterweight to politics, we are the opposite of politics. We have to do people's work, not politicians' work," Wenders said, among other remarks.
Writer and activist Arundhati Roy, who wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film “In Which Annie Gives It to Those Ones,” was due to present the film but chose to cancel her appearance at the festival. In a statement, Roy wrote that she was “shocked and disgusted” by Wenders’ comment, calling it “inexcusable.”
