The woman was taking part in a fire show in Nordergravar, north of the city wall, when she suddenly caught fire. The incident occurred sometime after 11 p.m. on Thursday night and police received the alarm at 11:37 p.m.
The woman was first taken to Visby Hospital and later, on Friday morning, to Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala. There she is being treated in the intensive care unit for serious injuries, the hospital said in a press release.
Her condition is described as stable.
A man in his 30s who tried to put out the fire was also burned, but only slightly, according to police.
The last official programme item at Nordergravar on Thursday evening was called “Bell Clash” and is described on the Medieval Week website as “a friendly competition between fire artists”.
The event was scheduled for 10 p.m.

As the accident occurred in connection with a fire show, the incident may be investigated as a workplace accident.
It was probably a matter of performing a work task, and therefore it is something that could become a workplace accident, says police spokesman Robert Sennerdal.
