For about 40 minutes, the astronauts were out of contact as they were behind the Moon.
"We will always choose Earth, we will always choose each other," astronaut Christina Koch said when contact was reestablished.
On Monday evening, local time in Sweden, the Orion spacecraft passed Apollo 13's April 1970 record for the farthest distance from Earth reached by a human - 400,171 kilometers.
Orion has also reached the farthest distance from Earth on the journey - 406,771 kilometers.
Astronaut Jeremy Hansen urged, "This generation and the next to make sure this record is not long-lived."
The astronauts also experienced a total solar eclipse, when the Sun was obscured by the Moon. Victor Glover described the experience as “sci-fi” and “unreal”.
The Sun is behind the Moon and the corona is still visible, and it is bright and creates almost a halo phenomenon around the entire Moon, he said, according to the BBC.
The Earth is so bright over there and the Moon just hangs in front of us.
US President Donald Trump called the astronauts on Tuesday night and congratulated them on making history.
"You are very brave to do what you do," Trump said.
The president has also invited the astronauts to the White House when their expedition is complete.
The spacecraft is expected to land in the Pacific Ocean on Friday.
