On Monday evening, local time in Sweden, the Orion spacecraft passed Apollo 13's April 1970 record of 400,171 kilometers from Earth.

Later on Monday, Orion is expected to reach the farthest distance of the mission from Earth - 406,778 kilometers.

The crew, consisting of three Americans and one Canadian, woke up that day to the voice of Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell.

"Welcome to my old neighborhood. It's a historic day and I know how busy you'll be, but don't forget to enjoy the view," Lovell said in a recorded message two months before his death in August last year.

Lovell was also on Apollo 8, which circled the moon in 1968.

The Artemis expedition is expected to land in the Pacific Ocean on Friday.
