A couple of key events in the London derby took place within a few minutes, with barely half an hour played of the first half.
First, Yoane Wissa was close to increasing Brentford's lead to 2-0 after Bryan Mbeumo's early goal. But Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya managed to get the ball away – after initially fumbling with it.
And shortly after, the score was levelled to 1-1. Thomas Partey shot hard, Gabriel Jesus held his position on the goalkeeper's return and headed in Arsenal's equalizer.
Almost as quickly, Arsenal took control of the match early in the second half. Mikel Merino (2-1 in the 50th minute) and Gabriel Martinelli (3-1 in the 53rd) paved the way for a three-point win in the only football match of the New Year's Day in the top division.
With half the season played, Arsenal have 39 points and are back in second place in the table, where Liverpool – despite a tight match – top with 45.
Arsenal play again on Saturday, away against Brighton. The next day, Liverpool will host Manchester United at Anfield.
