Saliba's club Arsenal has announced the news. The centre-back has returned to London, where he underwent tests with specialist doctors during the week.
The club writes that Saliba does not need surgery, but must undergo a rehabilitation programme that will begin immediately.
According to Arsenal's website, he is expected to be out for an extended period, with French newspaper L'Equipe reporting that the defender could be sidelined for four to five months.
Arsenal are the reigning Premier League champions and Saliba made 31 appearances during the title-winning season.
