Erfan Soltani, 26, is one of many people arrested in connection with the violent protests in Iran. Just days after his arrest, his family was informed that he had been sentenced to death, reports Hengaw, a Europe-based human rights organization.

A source close to the Soltani family told Hengaw that Iranian authorities have announced that the execution is scheduled to take place as early as Wednesday. The family has reportedly been denied access to the legal process and has only been granted a brief meeting before the execution.

According to the source, Erfan's sister, who is a lawyer, has tried to gain access to documents in the case through her contacts, but she has also been denied access.

Erfan Soltani was arrested at his home on Thursday, January 8, during a demonstration in the city of Fardis, west of Tehran. He is one of thousands who have been arrested since the protests began in late December.

Hundreds or even thousands of people are reported to have been killed in the unrest, while internet traffic and telephony remain blocked.
