It was after a DNA test, carried out in connection with the suspected theft, that the man could be linked to the rape, the police write on their website.
The man, who is in his 50s, has now been arrested on suspicion of raping a 19-year-old woman in Högdalen in southern Stockholm in October 2020.
He remained unknown until last week, when he was arrested for petty theft in a store and charged.
"The analysis showed that his DNA matched the DNA trace secured in connection with the 2020 rape," says Jonny Petersson, an investigator at the Farsta police.
