Saturday's demonstration was organized and authorized by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) to mark the anniversary of the country's 1993 constitutional crisis, in which hundreds of people were killed.

The arrests began after protesters chanted anti-government slogans such as "Down with the tsar" and "Down with the party of scoundrels and thieves," aimed at President Vladimir Putin and his United Russia party.

About 60 protesters were arrested, The Kyiv Independent reports. About half belonged to the Communist Party and the other half to the liberal party Yabloko, according to OVD-Info.
