Armenia Plans to Apply for EU Membership by 2028, Pashinyan Says

Armenia, a traditional Russian ally, plans to formally apply for EU membership, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced.

The hope is that Armenia will apply for full EU membership by 2028 at the latest, the prime minister said at a press conference.

Under Pashinyan, the Caucasus country has embarked on an increasingly pro-Western path, angering Moscow.

Relations deteriorated further after Armenia accused its ally Russia of failing to come to its aid when neighboring Azerbaijan seized the Nagorno-Karabakh region in a military offensive in 2023.

Earlier this year, Moscow imposed trade restrictions on Armenian agricultural exports and threatened to cut off preferential energy supplies.
