Armand Gustav Duplantis, also known as "Mondo", is a Swedish-American track and field athlete born in Lafayette, Louisiana, USA in 1999. Duplantis represented Louisiana State University and LSU Tigers during his time in the US, but has chosen to compete for Sweden in international competitions.
In recent years, Duplantis has shown that he is among the biggest sports stars in the world by repeatedly breaking the world record in pole vault. His current world record is 6.27 meters, set on February 28, 2025, at the pole vault gala in Clermont-Ferrand.
Duplantis speaks out about the political climate
Aftonbladet has asked Duplantis about Donald Trump and the current political climate, which he is not entirely comfortable discussing. He responds:
I don't really have much to say. I suppose I stand with one foot in both countries, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to give any kind of expert opinion on what's happening," he says, pausing briefly.
That's why I try to stay away from the topic, because I feel stupid when I talk about things I don't know much about.
However, on one point, Duplantis is clear: he hopes that Sweden will not be negatively affected by Donald Trump's policies.
I'm not particularly well-informed, but what I can say is that I'm Swedish when I'm in Sweden, so whatever happens in the future, I hope it turns out well for Sweden. That things don't get messed up here.
Next, Armand Duplantis will compete in the indoor World Championships in Nanjing, where he is the favorite to win his third consecutive gold medal.
