TT has previously reported that more and more tourists are coming to Sweden from southern Europe, in some cases to experience a cooler summer.
The Swedish Tourist Association (STF) has noted a clear increase in guests, mainly from Spain and France.
The proportion of inbound trips is increasing
Recent statistics from Swedavia show that international traffic at the company's ten Swedish airports continued to increase during July. When it comes to Southern Europe, Spain remains the largest market. There is no increase in traffic.
However, it does for France and Italy - by around 9 and 22 percent respectively, according to Elizabeth Axtelius.
It is unclear what proportion of that traffic consists of French and Italian visitors to Sweden.
But looking at the period 2019-2025, a trend is visible where the proportion of arrivals from those countries has increased compared with the proportion of Swedes traveling to Italy and France, according to Swedavia.
There is a general trend that private travel is increasing at a faster rate than business travel and that incoming travelers are increasing at a faster rate than Swedes traveling abroad, says Elizabeth Axtelius.
Reduced domestic travel
A total of just over 3.3 million passengers traveled through Swedavia's ten airports during July. This is an increase of almost two percent compared with July 2025.
While demand for international travel increased, domestic travel decreased due to lower supply.
Total travel at Sweden's largest airport, Arlanda, increased by just over one percent compared with the same month last year. The airport had just under 2.5 million travelers in July.
