The business has long struggled with poor profitability, according to Arla, which bought Falbygdens cheese from Finland’s Atria in 2014.
The company does not make its own cheese or use milk from Arla farmers. Instead, its operations are based on importing, storing, processing and packaging specialty and dessert cheeses.
"This is a heavy message for both our employees and the local community in Falköping. We have great respect for the long history of Falbygdens cheese and for the people affected by the decision," says Anna Schreil, Arla’s head of logistics and production.
Some of the dessert cheeses are being transferred to the Castello brand. The classic aged Swedish cheeses will live on under the Kvibille brand.
