The incident took place in the state of Arkansas. While warming up for an American football practice, the student felt something unusual moving in the helmet he was wearing. When he took off the helmet, he discovered a snake.
Animal specialists were called in and used water to lure the snake, a water moccasin, out. It was later released into a wooded area.
An animal welfare specialist said the player had been wearing the helmet for an hour and that it was “pure luck” that he was not bitten.
It's absolutely incredible, you almost had to be there and take pictures to really believe it's true, says the animal care specialist.
Water moccasins are deadly. The venom can cause serious illness and, in the worst case, death.
