Argentina to appeal World Cup final punishments to CAS after FIFA reduces Molina ban

Argentina was severely punished after the scandalous scenes in last summer’s World Cup final. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has now announced that it will appeal the punishments to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Shortly after the final whistle in the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, a major brawl broke out.

Among other things, Argentine player Leandro Paredes grabbed Eric García by the throat and wrestled Gavi to the ground.

Paredes was suspended for ten matches and fined the equivalent of approximately 850,000 kronor. Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches and received the same fine. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches.

The AFA appealed the punishments to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). Paredes' suspension remains unchanged, but Molina's has been reduced to four matches, along with a lower fine.

However, the AFA is not satisfied and is appealing all the punishments to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
