Argentina on Wednesday requested the extradition of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro from the United States.

According to court documents, Argentina wants to hold Maduro accountable for crimes against humanity. An Argentine court has invoked the principle of universal jurisdiction.

Maduro was detained by U.S. authorities in connection with a military raid on the Venezuelan capital Caracas on January 3. He was taken out of the country and flown to New York.

Argentine prosecutors accuse Maduro and Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello of staging a systematic plan since 2014 to oppress, torture, murder and persecute the population.

Maduro is suspected by U.S. authorities of crimes related to drug trafficking.
